Family Background
Harvey Jones was born into a professional military family. His world view was shaped by the frequent family redeployment dictated by the career of his U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers father in Asia, Latin America and up & down the East Coast of the United States.
With an aptitude for science & technology, Harvey pursued his B.S. in Mathematics & Computer Science from Georgetown University in 1974. He completed his formal education in 1980 when he earned an M.S. in Management from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Jones began his career in engineering, transitioned into marketing and ultimately general management. As an operating executive, Harvey cofounded and took public two substantial software companies. Subsequently, as a private venture capitalist, he has been involved in the financing, formation and development of numerous hardware and software businesses. Harvey moved to the San Francisco bay area with his former wife in 1980, ultimately settling in Palo Alto where they raised 3 great children. Harvey III (30) was Woodside Priory’s Valedictorian; then earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from MIT; and is now pursuing an engineering career at Google. Carolyn (28) was Castilleja’s Valedictorian, graduated High Honors & Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University and is now an accomplished food writer in New York City. Gregory (21) graduated from the Presidio’s Bay School and is now a senior at UC Santa Cruz and simultaneously pursuing a professional career in music.
Harvey maintains his primary residence in San Francisco and a summer home on Nantucket Island. Summers on the island keep him in touch with East Coast family and friends. Over the last 24 Nantucket summers, Harvey has become an established member of the community with active associations with the Nantucket & New York Yacht Clubs, Nantucket Community Sailing, the Nantucket Historic Association and the Nantucket Athenaeum.
Harvey’s personal interests include sailing, tennis, cycling, historic preservation, antiques, and shellfish aquaculture. When not on the water, Harvey has invested a great deal of time overseeing the restoration of two classic yachts and various historic Nantucket structures including the “Charles Coffin House” at 78 Main Street, two 19th Century cottages and “Independence”, a boat house on the Old North Wharf. Harvey’s cottages and Independence were featured on the PBS “This Old House” series in 2003.
